Estimating Summer Arctic Warming Amplitude Relative to Pre-Industrial Levels Using Tree Rings

چکیده
Estimating long-term trends and short-term amplitudes requires reliable temperature (Temp) observations in the pre-industrial period when few situ existed Arctic. Tree-ring materials are most available used to reconstruct past Arctic Temp variations. However, previous studies incorporated that insensitive local variabilities. The derived reconstruction qualities low (indicated by calibration R2), uncertainties inherent various detrending methodologies unknown. To (N60°–N90°) summer (June–August) 1850–1900 variations over centuries, we screened 1116 tree-ring width density records applied four functions (sf-RCS, RCS, MOD, spline). In total, 338–396 show significant correlations (p < 0.05) with Climate Research Unit (CRU) of corresponding grid point. These were selected combined into a proxy record. achieved explained 45–57% instrumental variance since 1950. 2012–2021 warming (1.42–1.74 °C) estimated anomaly datasets extending back 1850 within range from our reconstructions, despite using methods. findings could suggest Berkeley HadCRU5 interpolating (6–73) meteorological stations still represent mean variation 1850–1900, updated can be as reference for 1550–2007 history.

Fourfold higher tundra volatile emissions due to arctic summer warming
Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), which are mainly emitted by vegetation, may create either positive or negative climate forcing feedbacks. In the Subarctic, BVOC emissions are highly responsive to temperature, but the effects of climatic warming on BVOC emissions have not been assessed in more extreme arctic ecosystems. The Arctic undergoes rapid climate change, with air temperature...
متن کاملRole of land-surface changes in arctic summer warming.
A major challenge in predicting Earth's future climate state is to understand feedbacks that alter greenhouse-gas forcing. Here we synthesize field data from arctic Alaska, showing that terrestrial changes in summer albedo contribute substantially to recent high-latitude warming trends. Pronounced terrestrial summer warming in arctic Alaska correlates with a lengthening of the snow-free season ...
متن کاملShifting El Niño inhibits summer Arctic warming and Arctic sea-ice melting over the Canada Basin
Arctic climate changes include not only changes in trends and mean states but also strong interannual variations in various fields. Although it is known that tropical-extratropical teleconnection is sensitive to changes in flavours of El Niño, whether Arctic climate variability is linked to El Niño, in particular on interannual timescale, remains unclear. Here we demonstrate for the first time ...
متن کاملArctic tree rings as recorders of variations in light availability
Annual growth ring variations in Arctic trees are often used to reconstruct surface temperature. In general, however, the growth of Arctic vegetation is limited both by temperature and light availability, suggesting that variations in atmospheric transmissivity may also influence tree-ring characteristics. Here we show that Arctic tree-ring density is sensitive to changes in light availability ...
